Hope in the Midst of Rejection

Though this may seem like a hard word, I believe it is God’s grace that prepares us for the days ahead. He knows what our future holds and desires for us to be equipped, encouraged and full of faith as we wade through unknown waters. In our desire to share truth with others, we need to be prepared for the rejection that will come without becoming wounded ourselves and losing hope.  He wants us to be steadfast in prayer and be free of any spirit of rejection in order to effectively pray and intercede for those who are turning their backs on God.
He showed me what is coming and what some are experiencing even now. It’s the total rejection of His Word, His Truth and His love; but not because of misunderstanding or ignorance. It’s because of a hardened heart. It’s not because of ineffective communication or lack of compassion. It’s an intentional rejection of God’s love because of a depraved mind (2 Timothy 3:1-10). Though this is not a new word, we have not been prepared for how personal this might be and the Lord wants us to respond rightly. Scriptures have warned us of what is to come: “And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another…and because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” (Matthew 24:10-13).
I saw and felt in the spirit the pain that this rejection would cause in families. I saw answers and provision being given freely and without fault to those who desperately needed it. Yet, those who needed it discarded these gifts of love and threw them to the wind. Not only did they reject the gifts, but the Giver. The feeling I had as I watched was heart-wrenching. I could feel the love and longing of those who were reaching out to those they cared for, loved and desired to help. There was a vulnerability and transparency shared. And yet, their attempts of rescue were utterly rejected.
The reality was that those who needed this help were mentally sick – unstable and unable to reason for themselves. They had taken on a worldly mindset and it had clouded their thinking. This is what the spirit of the world does. It causes spiritual blindness and the inability to receive truth. I also saw that many who are suffering with this have come from years of dysfunctional relationships. Our culture is now reaping the consequences of a lack of leadership in our homes and in the Church. This is not a judgment, simply a reality of many who grew up without healthy loving fathers, either naturally or spiritually. Because of these emotional voids, the enemy has come in to cause bitterness of heart and soul.
But, there is hope! The reason God is showing us this is to encourage us to persevere in our prayers and love.

“Therefore, since we have such a hope , we are very bold…whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away…and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (2 Corinthians 3:12-18)

Our human tendency will be to either feel guilt for our inability to reach others or we will let their rejection immobilize us. We must be free of both. We can’t assume it is our fault nor can we take this rejection personally. We aren’t responsible for the choices others make. There will be a time when no evangelistic approach or act of kindness will make the difference. Though we can’t fathom how someone could reject such Perfect Love, the reality is that many will.
We need to hang on to the Truth we have received. We need to keep our ear pressed to His heart to love unconditionally as He does and not succumb to rejection ourselves. We must remember that He, too, was rejected. This is a part of sharing in His sufferings, but can also serve to bring comfort and hope when remembering the ultimate victory that He won.
As I said, this is not “good news” that people will fall away. Yet, it is God’s grace that shows us what is to come so as not to give up or give in. There is still time and we must be interceding for those who are walking in darkness. In many cases, their turning back will not be because of our well-crafted words or acts of service, but because of our prayers. Only the Spirit of the Lord can break the veil of darkness and we are invited to join Him to stand in the gap for those who are lost.
