“The Victory is Greater than The Pain”

This is the word the Lord gave me a few days ago as I was feeling the burden of a painful situation. As with anyone carrying a burden, the waiting and wondering, the grieving, and the temptation to doubt can be almost overwhelming. Whether it is for ourselves or a loved one, a physical ailment or a wound of the soul, our pain can easily disorient us and rob us of our faith.
The words He spoke to me were so simple, and yet it made me stop and think. Had I lost my perspective? Was I getting lost in the pain or looking to a future outcome of victory? Immediately, He reminded me of a truth I had learned earlier in the week about the Robe of Righteousness. This robe is not just a mantle or garment we wear as a symbol of our salvation. This robe holds power and authority. The fact is, He is the one who gives His sons and daughters this robe of authority – because He wore it first.

“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.” (Isaiah 6:1-2 NIV)

Do you know why the “…train of His robe filled the temple”?
I learned that in ancient times when a king had won a great victory and defeated an enemy, the king would walk through the battle ground and take for his men the spoils. But, the greatest recognition for the king that he had been victorious was signified when he would have a piece of the defeated king’s robe cut off and then sewn onto the bottom or the train of his own robe. For a king in Old Testament times, the length of his robe (or the train) would therefore be a sign or an indication of his greatness i.e. the longer his train, the more victories he had won and the more kings he had defeated. Think of it! That robe that Christ wears is not just a symbol of royalty or majesty. It is a robe that signifies absolute VICTORY over EVERY foe and enemy of our soul! He has already won every battle we face and conquered every sin, sickness, disease, temptation, weakness, iniquity, and curse. When we enthrone Him as King and worship Him, there is no room left for defeat – only VICTORY.
But, it gets better!

“I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness.” (Isaiah 61:10 NKJV)

He has now put that robe on US! All the victories He has won are sewn into that robe and placed on us. He has “mantled” us with victory! We don’t have to battle for it. He has already won it for us. All we have to do is wear it with the confident assurance of its power and authority.
The Lord also showed me that in addition to the victories He has won, each of us have won victories that make that robe even longer. Think of your past victories. Whenever you overcame a sin, weakness, or temptation, it was marked as victory for you and your robe got longer. Every time you defeated a particular foe, your robe got longer. Every time you said “No” to the Accuser and “Yes” to God, your robe got longer. Every time you overcame a sin or stronghold, your robe got longer. Your own journey has been marked by victories both large and small and the patches of robe from all those defeated “kings” have been added to your robe.

The enemy, however, does not want you to remember what you’ve already won. He will do all he can to make the present pain greater than your memory. This is why we need to recall our past victories and remember what the Lord has ALREADY DONE.

I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the LORD has done.” (Psalm 118:17 NIV)

Look back and consider all the ways in which you have already overcome. Remember the wildernesses you have already come through, the battles you’ve already won, the lessons learned and wisdom gained. Don’t let the enemy steal your history and don’t let your pain in the present become greater (2 Corinthians 4:17). You have already defeated some giants in your life and come out better than before. You are a victor, not a victim. Any present pain you now feel has already been dealt with at the cross and the victory is greater than the pain.
Remember His finished work and don’t forget what has already been won on your behalf. You have been given the King’s robe of victory.  Your robe is longer than you think.
