If you regularly engage in spiritual warfare, I appeal to you. Evaluate your tools of intercession!
Many believers are using Old Testament practices without realizing New Covenant realities in dealing with spiritual strongholds over cities and regions. In this short video teaching, I take you through an overview of the book of Acts and detail how the early disciples dealt with these principalities. It’s not what you think. The few scriptures in the New Testament that refer to principalities make clear the realities and boundaries associated with them. :

We are affected by them, but are called to STAND in the truth – not engage in battle. Ephesians 6:12-13 (NKJV) – For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
God Himself will deal with them. Colossians 2:15 (NKJV) – And having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Even principalities won’t keep us from God’s love. Romans 8:38-39 (NKJV) – For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What we destroy and “take down” are not the principalities, but the lies we believe. 2 Corinthians 10:5-6 (NKJV) – We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.

Our spiritual battle is in our minds and belief systems, and it’s our own thoughts we have to battle and take captive. Though demonic forces may try to discourage us and take us down, we can resist the enemy, apprehend the truth, and stand on God’s Word in order to disarm any attack against us. When we deal with corporate strongholds, it’s the same pattern.

I am using an outline I’ve prepared for you to use as a follow-up guide for prayer and reflection. It’s found on my blog under PDF Downloads HERE (A Biblical Framework for Dealing with Principalities and Spiritual Rulers). I encourage you to read through these scriptures and the ways in which the early apostles faced opposition, threats, and outright witchcraft in cities. We can learn a lot and discover new strategies in our prayers as well as new approaches to city-wide transformation. Watch and share with others who have a call to intercede for cities and regions!

  1. John Paul Jones wrote an excellent book on this subject. Perhaps you have read it already. It is called Needless Casualties of War.

    1. Yes, Barbara – I have heard of it, and even watched it years ago. John Paul Jackson is one of the few prophetic teachers that I know who has taught on this subject. He left us far too soon…

  2. Wow,that really helped me a lot.The journey through Acts was very convincing. Now I can keep focused on proclaiming the truth and supporting those who do also. Thank you.

  3. I disagree with you on several fronts. When we speak against or to the powers of darkness, we are doing so standing on the victory of Christ. Paul spoke against them in the book of Acts. If I understand rightly, your arguments are the same that the fundamentalist are using to forbid speaking in tongues. It says after the last apostle died tongues ceased. My advice to you is to stick to your calling.

  4. I was asked to look at this video and I was very impressed. It takes a lot of humility to teach and practice something and then realize that it is wrong. Your biblical reasoning was very and I wish everyone would examine what they are doing by the clear examples we have in the Word.
I also read your book, Oracles of Grace, after getting the Kindle edition. One of the best books I have ever read. It is a great blessing and I hope it goes out to many people.
I should introduce myself. My name is Brian Scarborough. I am a Bible teacher and friend of Don and Vickie Morley’s in Chincoteague.
I pray that God will bless the ministry He has called you to.

  5. I liked your teaching. You made it clear and easy to understand. I want to glorify the Father, and step on the enemy who lies and deceives. We have to stop agreeing with His lies and declare God’s truths. Demons look for a living being to live in or latch onto. Principalities don’t need someone’s body; they can function on their own. We have to know our adversary and resist him. We need to know our identity in Christ and stand- unshakable- filled with Him! Let’s come together and break the kingdoms of darkness! Thy Kingdom come…

  6. This is such a helpful teaching. We live in Utah which I described 20 years ago as an English Speaking Pagan Nation. Unfortunately, Christians only argued with ( for the most part) and denounced the belief, ridiculed and rejected people of the local religion. When we came, the LORD said he was going to invade Utah. He has done so by causing many more Christians began to move to this state. Also, those of us who came began to come starting about 20 years ago, began to change the spiritual climate by loving the lost. This teaching is so helpful in also teaching us to be more effective in our prayers. Blessings and thank you
