The posture we take in spiritual warfare is critical to the kind of outcome we are contending for. During this election cycle we have warring in the spirit and using the sword of the Lord to divide soul from spirit and the truth from the lies. Heaven has been pleased with the passionate prayer and zealous intercession for this nation! But now, in order to SEAL THE DEAL we must consider a different posture.

It’s time to TAKE OUR SEATS AS GOVERNING RULERS WITH CHRIST. Just as many prayed for the seating of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, we too have a seat that must be secured in the heavenly realms if we are to rule in the midst of our enemies.

The Lord says to my Lord: “SIT (settle, inhabit, establish) at My right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! (Psalm 110:1-2 ESV)

This admonition is to SIT. That means to take your place of authority and be at rest because the kingdom is already yours! In ancient times, to sit in a seat was not just a matter of finding a place of temporary repose. Most people didn’t even have furniture, so any seat was a symbol of status and nobility. For a ruler, a throne was not just some ornate piece of furniture, but a representation of kingdom authority and rule. When a king sat down, he was indicating his absolute right to rule and reign over that kingdom (see Revelation 3:21).

The Lord tells us to be seated next to Him as He makes His enemies our footstool. It was an ancient custom in eastern nations for kings and rulers to literally stand on the necks of conquered kings to make them, as it were, their footstools (see Joshua 10:24). This is a prophetic picture of what God will do to our enemies – crush them right underneath our feet!

The God of peace will soon crush satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. (Romans 16:20)

Notice that HE does the crushing, but WE do the sitting and ruling! Our role in spiritual warfare is to represent the King by declaring God’s laws from the throne as the heavenly host fulfill those words. Note, too, that God is a “man of war” (see Exodus 15:3) but He is also the Prince of Peace (see Isaiah 9:6). When His government is functioning, it is marked by His peace – even in the middle of enemy warfare. Regardless of how the enemy tries to woo us into nonstop warfare, we cannot abdicate our seat of authority or leave it empty! We must stay seated in the heavenly realms and rule with Him to see His kingdom manifest on the earth.

The spiritual opposition will seek to stir up emotional reactions and cultural unrest in the weeks ahead, but we must take our seats as governing authorities in the Kingdom of God and learn to rule from His throne. It is His kingdom rule that brings alignment to governments and peace to all the chaos.

Righteousness and justice are the foundations of His throne and He invites us to take our place as governing heirs of the promise that is already here, and is yet to come. Do not get distracted by the warfare or get pulled into needless battle. It is time to take your seat and rule.

Shake yourself from the dust and arise; BE SEATED, O Jerusalem; loose the bonds from your neck, O captive daughter of Zion. (Isaiah 52:2)
